Aston Villa are Europa League champions after thrashing Freiburg 3-0 in the final in Istanbul, ending a 30-year trophy drought in spectacular fashion.
The king of the competition Unai Emery has his hands on the trophy for a record-extending fifth time, and this triumph was celebrated wildly by Villa fans – both in the Besiktas Stadium and back home.
Villa’s victory also secured their first major European prize since the 1982 European Cup.
First Half: Stunning Strikes Break the Deadlock
Freiburg managed to go toe-to-toe with Aston Villa for much of the first half, but the Bundesliga side fell apart down the final stretch, and Villa took full control of this European final.
Aston Villa took the lead on 41 minutes with a superb strike from Youri Tielemans. Morgan Rogers’ floated cross from a short corner was latched onto by the unmarked Belgian, and his low volley arrowed into the net with textbook technique.
It was 2-0 seconds before halftime through another stunning goal, this time from Emiliano Buendia. Freiburg allowed Villa too much space on the edge of their box, and the Argentine playmaker curled a magnificent left-footed shot into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance.
Second Half: Rogers Seals the Victory
Morgan Rogers added the third on 58 minutes when Buendia turned provider. His low cross into the six-yard box from the left was stabbed home at the near post by Rogers.
Key Stats: Freiburg managed only 4 shots to Villa’s 17, with Villa dominating possession and creating 6 shots on target.
Unai Emery: The King of Europa League
“It’s really something fantastic. We played in a very serious way this year. So, so focused. I was telling them, ‘we need desire in this competition and to show on the pitch that you are the protagonist’. And they did it. This final is the confirmation of how we are progressing.”
Emery has now won the Europa League for a fifth time – he’s the second manager to win a major European competition five times after Carlo Ancelotti in the Champions League. He had previously won the competition three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.
John McGinn: The Proudest Night of My Career
“I can’t believe it. This club was close to being in a right bad way seven years ago. Nassef Sawiris bought the club and had one remit: to get the club back to the Premier League and then try to compete at the levels it had before. Tonight was everything we have built coming together.”

“The pride I felt at 3-0 with 10 minutes to go, thinking ‘we’re European champions’ is something I can’t even describe. It’s the proudest night of my career so far.”
