Paris Saint-Germain defended their UEFA Champions League crown in dramatic fashion, defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw through extra time at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

This victory cemented PSG as the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid’s three-year reign from 2016 to 2018.

First Half: Arsenal’s Dream Start

The Gunners got off to a dream start, taking the lead after just six minutes. Kai Havertz, starting as the central striker in Mikel Arteta’s most controversial selection decision, was immediately vindicated.

The goal came when Marquinhos’ attempted clearance ricocheted off Leandro Trossard and fell perfectly into Havertz’s path. The German international raced forward from near the halfway line before firing a ferocious left-footed strike into the roof of the net from a seemingly impossible tight angle.

Despite PSG dominating possession for the remainder of the half, they failed to land a single blow on Arsenal’s defense. Havertz could have doubled the lead in first-half injury time but was denied by Marquinhos.

Key Stat First Half: PSG attacked 32 times, Arsenal just three times. Yet Arsenal led 1-0.

Second Half: PSG Fight Back

The defending champions continued to dominate possession after the break, but Arsenal’s defensive organization kept them at bay until the 65th minute. Then came the turning point.

Cristhian Mosquera, who had been booked earlier, clumsily brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the penalty area. Following a VAR review, referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the spot. Ousmane Dembele stepped up and calmly sent David Raya the wrong way, slotting into the bottom left corner to equalize.

PSG then had chances to win it in normal time. Kvaratskhelia’s left-footed effort crashed onto the outside of Raya’s post, Vitinha grazed the top of the net, and Bradley Barcola shot over with what would have been the last kick of regular time.

Arsenal finished with just 26% possession, the lowest recorded by a team in a Champions League final since data began being collected in 2004.

Extra Time: Controversy and Caution

In the first half of extra time, Arsenal were convinced they should have been awarded a penalty when Noni Madueke went down in the box. Their furious protests saw Declan Rice and Mikel Arteta booked, but the appeals were waved away by the referee.

With both teams having run out of steam, extra time became a cautious affair. The match went to penalties for the eighth time in a Champions League final since the competition was rebranded in 1992.

Penalty Shootout Drama

The shootout was a nerve-shredding affair:

Arsenal 3 Declan Rice Scored

PSG’s Lucas Beraldo converted the decisive fifth penalty, leaving Gabriel needing to score to extend the shootout. The Brazilian defender, however, sent his effort high over the bar, sparking jubilant celebrations among PSG players and fans.

David Raya’s save from Nuno Mendes was a moment of brilliance, but ultimately not enough to prevent Arsenal’s heartbreak.

What They Said

“It’s stronger than last year because we knew before the match just how difficult it would be to play against Arsenal. As a club and a city, it’s incredible to win, and I think we deserved it over the course of the season.”

— Luis Enrique, PSG Coach

“It’s incredible, back to back. From the very first day of this season the coach said it’s hard to win, and winning twice is even more difficult. That was the mentality.”

— Marquinhos, PSG Captain

“It’s gutting. It’s devastating to lose a Champions League final on penalties. But we try to take a lot of perspective from how far we’ve come as a group. An incredible season. We took the game to penalties. It’s a lottery.”

— Declan Rice, Arsenal Midfielder
